Port of the month December 2015: Fonseca Vintage Port 1948

1948 is the oldest „split declaration“ year, meaning that some producers have declared 1947, some 1948 and a few of them both years. Although 1947 is a superb Vintage in itself, the Ports from 48 are astonishing to drink right now. Very dense, dark orange color. Balanced Bouquet with a hint of iodine, a strong herbal touch and perfectly matured toffee and honey. The palate reveals the same: lots of toffee and herbs, honey and a perfectly integrated acidity. Long, extremely long aftertaste with a multi-layered finish. 19
